Why Turkish Towels?

Turkish towels, traditionally known as peshtemals, have been used in Turkish bath culture for centuries. Unlike thick terry towels, they are woven as a flat cotton fabric, which makes them lighter, faster to dry, and easier to carry.

Today, Turkish towels are widely used not only in hammams but also at the beach, in spas, gyms, and homes around the world.

Lightweight and Easy to Pack

Because of their flat weave, Turkish towels are thin and lightweight, yet still absorbent. They fold into a compact size, which makes them ideal for travel, beach bags, gym bags, or suitcases.

Many travellers prefer Turkish towels as a travel towel because they take up very little space and dry quickly after use.

Quick-Drying and Practical

Traditional terry towels can stay damp for a long time. Turkish towels dry much faster thanks to their woven structure. This makes them practical for everyday use, especially in warm climates or when travelling.

Sand-Resistant Beach Towels

One of the reasons Turkish towels are popular at the beach is that sand doesn’t cling to the fabric the same way it does with thick towels. A simple shake usually removes the sand, keeping the towel cleaner and more comfortable to use.

Made from Natural Cotton

Most traditional Turkish towels are made from 100% cotton, which makes them breathable, soft, and comfortable against the skin. Cotton fibres also become softer with repeated washing, making the towel more comfortable over time.

The Story Behind Our Turkish Towels

The tradition of weaving Turkish towels comes from western Anatolia, particularly the textile region of Denizli. Near Denizli lies the historic town of Buldan, where cotton weaving has been part of daily life for generations.

For centuries, families in Buldan produced cotton fabrics on traditional looms, supplying textiles to markets throughout the region. Among these fabrics was the peshtemal, a lightweight cloth used in Turkish hammams.

The peshtemal was valued for its practicality: it was light, easy to wash, quick to dry, and comfortable to wear in the humid environment of the bath.

Over time, these textiles became known beyond Turkey. Today, Turkish towels are appreciated worldwide for their simplicity, versatility, and natural cotton comfort.

At Berca Home, we work with producers in the Denizli region to bring these traditional cotton textiles to modern homes. Our aim is to offer practical everyday products while staying connected to the long history of Turkish weaving.
